I use a panorama as a background in a VR world. The panorama in jpg format is automatically mapped on an extruded polygon by our Scope program. So we do not use the standard background node. It is our experience that images that are wider then 4000 pixels do not appear in the Cortona Client. Is there any way to allow images wider than 4000 pixels? In contrast we can use trees or landscape elements in png format that are more than half a megabyte in size without any problem. So apparently it is not the file size that is the limiting factor. You may want to look at our website www.toposcopy.com to see een example of such a landscape visualization.

Cortona VRML client does not have any internal limitations for displaying VRML scenes or textures. As I know some video cards have limitations on the texture size. Also large textures require more graphics memory, when a renderer with hardware acceleration is used. I think if you choose the software renderer in Cortona all textures in your scene will be displayed.
