Subject:
Embedding parameters documentation inconsistencies

Hi,
I've been going though the provided documentation about the parameters which can be used when embedding VRML in a webpage. I've noticed various inconsistencies between the different documents and some incomplete or unclear information. I was hoping some of the stuff can be clarified a bit. With a bit of luck the following might be useful for you too.
- 'object' and 'embed' element differences
There are two different parameters lists provided for the 'embed' and 'object' element [3][4]. For a large part the lists are identical but there are some exceptions. Is there really a difference in functioning between using the 'object' and 'embed' element? Can't all parameters be used in both embedding methods?
Parameters not included in the 'Embed Tag' list are: 'BackColor', 'mask', 'NavigationMode', 'Scene', 'ShowLogo', 'ShowProgress' and 'SlowMode'.
Parameters not included in the 'Object Tag' list are: 'mask', 'rendereroptimization', 'vrml_background_color', 'vrml_dashboard' and 'vrml_splashscreen'.
- 'src' vs. 'scene'
On the 'Using in HTML' page [1] it is stated that both the 'embed' and 'object' tag element require the 'src' parameter to specify which scene to load. However, in the 'User's Guide' [2] they talk about using the 'Scene' parameter for the same purpose. 'Scene' is also included in the 'Object Tag' list [4] but not in the 'Embed Tag' list [3]. Why are there two different parameters for the same purpose? Am I assuming correct that both parameters function exactly the same? Which of the two is recommended to use?
- 'vrml_background_color' vs. 'backcolor'
On the pages 'Using in HTML' [1], 'User's Guide' [2] and 'Embed Tag' [3] they all use 'vrml_background_color' to set the background colour. The 'Object Tag' page [4], however, does not include this parameter but lists 'backcolor' instead. Is 'backcolor' an error or can this one be used as well? Am I assuming correct that both parameters function exactly the same? Which of the two is recommended to use?
- 'travel_speed' vs. 'TravelSpeed'
The 'Embed Tag' page [3] lists the 'travel_speed' parameter and the 'Object Tag' page [4] has 'TravelSpeed' instead. Is one of the two an error or can both be used? Am I assuming correct that both parameters function exactly the same? Which of the two is recommended to use?
- 'mask'
The 'Using in HTML' page [1] mentions a 'mask' parameter. Additional documentation about it's function and its possible values is nowhere to be found. How does the parameter function and what are its possible values?
- 'rendereroptimization' values
The 'rendereroptimization' has no possible values listed in its documentation, nor does its function get described. How does the parameter function and what are its possible values? What is it's default value?
- 'SlowMode' maximum value
What is the maximum allowed value of this parameter and what values are recommended?
- 'Version'??
Both tag lists include this parameter but it can only be used to retrieve a value. Why is it included since you can only use parameters to set values?
- 'show_hidden_viewpoints' possible values
No possible values are included for this parameter. Should 'true' and 'false' be used or '0' and '1' (just like 'navigationbar')? What is it's default value?
- 'showFPS' possible values
No possible values are included for this parameter. Should 'true' and 'false' be used or '0' and '1' (just like 'navigationbar')? What is it's default value?
- 'TravelSpeed' possible values
No possible values are included for this parameter. What can be provided? What is it's default value?
- Default values
For the following parameters there is no default value provided in the documentation. Can you tell me what they are? 'collidermode', 'consolemode', 'cpuloading', 'headlight', 'loaddroppedscene', 'navigationbar', 'NavigationMode', 'PixelBufferAccess', 'rendererhints', 'RendererMaxTextureSize', 'ShowLogo', 'ShowProgress', 'showrenderingtime', 'viewpoint_transition_mode' and 'WaitForAllResourses'.
- Possible values unclear
Some parameters include a '<name> = ' prefix for its possible values. Like e.g. with the 'ConsoleMode' parameter. Here its possible values include 'conHide = 1' instead of just '1'. I assume just '1' should be used. Why is the prefix included and what is it's purpose? Can this name be used as well instead of the number?
- Parameter support history
Is there information available about each specific parameter or possibly its values and from which version of VRML it was included/supported?
The list turned out to be rather long, sorry about that, though I hope most, if not all, questions can be answered. It would sure be a big help to me and others.
Yours,
Age
